Competidor Brand Kimono Co. makes its long awaited return with this very special Collaboration Tee.
Backstory:
Guam’s Melchor Manibusan received a 2 week notice to fill in for an injured opponent to fight Tatsuya Kawajiri in Japan’s Dream 11. Kawajiri was ranked the #1 lightweight (155lbs) and #5 in the world. Manibusan usually competes at 145lbs but was too “game” to pass up such an opportunity. So, with that said Manibusan was now faced with the toughest fight up of his life—a David & Goliath match up...being a smaller opponent and fighting a bigger and stronger opponent. Manibusan had nothing to lose but everything to gain.
The pride of Guahan was on a collision course to battle Japan’s #1 fighter in Dream 11, Japan’s biggest MMA Event at the time.
His nephew “Mighty” Marvin Manibusan (Arguably Guam’s most decorated and top graphic designer) was called upon to design his fight shirt. A shirt that would represent the spirit of the Manibusan family and something that would stand out amongst the rest of the fight shirts in Japan. A shirt to represent Guam on a worldwide stage.
Mighty Marvy created the “Mighty Underdog” (face Logo) for the fight tee and it was the debut of this iconic logo that would have a long history in the fight game.
Mighty would later create his own company “Competidor Brand Kimono Co.” which rapidly steamrolled into one of the top Jiu Jitsu companies in the world. His success with the brand catapulted the “Mighty Underdog” Logo worldwide. Mighty would also create his second company “Crowns Guam” which he began to devote most of his time too, that later resulted to him putting “Competidor Brand” on the back burner. He would later sell the company to long time friend and Spike 22 Familia homie, Tim Shiroma.
After a couple of successful Kimono releases, Shiroma would also have other projects that left the brand idle.
Fast forward to today... Melchor, Tim and Marvin have teamed up together to revive the Competidor Brand Company and begin with the “Mighty Underdog” Logo that started it all. The iconic Mighty Face goes deep... it was inspired by “Mickey Mouse” who holds a strong meaning to the Manibusan “MM” family. Mighty wanted to incorporate a character design that was hard, looked street and had that Japanese flair. The yelling face represents the roar of the spirit inside all of us. The Manibusan family was taught to always go hard and go for broke every single time. Their short stature always made them the “Underdog” in every single fight and their “Mighty” spirit can always be seen in their competition. Hence, naming the logo “MIGHTY UNDERDOG.”
Melchor’s walkout in Dream 11 rocking the “Mighty Underdog” Logo would forever be a staple in the brands history.
